Quick definition

A riparian zone is the vegetated area along rivers and streams that protects water quality and provides habitat.

What it means in practice

Healthy riparian buffers reduce erosion, cool streams, filter runoff, support biodiversity, and stabilize banks. Development too close to streams often weakens these functions and increases temperature and pollution stress.

Why it matters for rights of nature

Riparian protection is often one of the most practical and enforceable ways to safeguard a river’s ability to function, recover, and support life.
