Restoration

Quick definition

Restoration is the repair of ecological harm by returning a natural system toward health, function, and resilience.

What it means in practice
Restoration can include replanting native species, reconnecting floodplains, removing barriers to fish passage, restoring flows, or cleaning pollutants. It is different from simply paying money damages.

Why it matters for rights of nature
Many rights of nature frameworks center restoration as a primary remedy. Ecuador’s Constitution explicitly recognizes restoration as a right of nature.
