Reciprocity and Non-reciprocity

Quick definition

Reciprocity is mutual obligation. In rights of nature law, the relationship is typically non-reciprocal: nature has rights, and others have duties not to violate them.

What it means in practice
This is similar to how legal rights work for infants or people who cannot take on legal duties. Rights can exist without matching duties on the rights-holder.

Why it matters for rights of nature
It clarifies a common misconception that rights require nature to “perform” or “behave” in a certain way.
